MsSupa, real name, Ayanda Malele, is the eldest of 4 children born and raised in Benoni (East of Johannesburg) is a Rapper/Singer/Songwriter who specialises in Hip Hop and RnB. Having been interested in performance from an early age, this led to her planning talent shows for cousins and neighbours from the tender age of 7 and always winning with a Brenda Fassie piece and collaboration with her male cousin on Mahlathini and Mahotella Queens performance.
Previously MsSupa thought that Hip Hop was for males and it was only after hearing Foxy Brown in 1996, where she realised that females were ‘able’ to rap. She started rapping at the age of 13 and has never put her pen down since.
In the early 2000’s, Supa moved to Sunnyside, Pretoria to study Marketing which she didn’t complete, but ended up chasing her passion for Music. Supa actively started performing and recording this is where she met current mainstream rappers like Blaklez and Nveigh as well as producers like Nyambs and Mizi. In 2005 with a love and passion for the industry she completed a 6-month Music Production course at EMENDY Multimedia Technology Institute.
She has been active in the music industry since 2003 and has carved a name for herself in the Hip Hop community as the first female to have adorned the cover of South Africa’s main Hip Hop Magazine, Hype, by 2005. In 2007, the release of her EP ‘The Complete Puzzle’ was launched at the Pretoria State Theatre, which earned her the No 1 artist on Tbo Touch’s ‘Rhyme and Reason’ on Metro FM for 7 weeks running with her single ‘10111’. After a couple of years, all while working different 9-5 jobs in the sales and client services industry, looking for stability in order to fund her love for the art of rap, she released her second EP entitled ‘HerStory in the making’ which was released under her own record label, ‘The Undiscovered Brand’ in 2015. The EP includes her singles such as ‘Mshove’ featuring celebrated CapCity rappers such as Blaklez and PDotO.
Her notable collaboration is on the SAMA nominated, Hip Hop Pantsula’s ‘Dumela’ album where they crafted the emotional song entitled ‘Mmago Rrago’ where HHP talks about the end of his relationship with his long-time girlfriend and mother of his son. She has since collaborated with Fortune Masina on his ‘AboMrapper Vol 2’, released in 2015.
MsSupa is a name that is synonymous with Female Hip Hop in the country, she went on to start a project called ‘Ladies of the Mic’ which showcased unknown females on a larger platform. She has spoken on many panels and radio interviews about the plight of Females in Hip Hop and has inspired current female Hip Hop artists such as Nadia Nakai to brave it out in the male dominated industry.
Even outside of the entertainment industry, MsSupa is passionate about women empowerment and that of young minds. She has been running a separate business for 4 years called ‘Undiscovered Minds’, offering an NQF level 4 qualification in Short Term insurance which is accredited with INSETA.
